An established spring running event and part of the Northport Triple Crown Series, the Doug Wood Trail Run (Featured in Newsday as one of 5 “Must Run” Events, see excerpt below) is a XC Trail Running race in memory of Dr. Douglas Wood, a local psychiatrist, sportsman, and friend.

Dr. Wood inspired many to share the excitement of adventure and the local beauty. The race attempts to continue his inspirational legacy with a unique run through Northport’s Makamah Preserve.

Doug Wood Memorial 5K Cross Country Run, Northport: The namesake for this race was a longtime member of the Northport Running Club. He was known to love the woods -- specifically, running along the trails of the 160-acre Makamah Nature Preserve, near Crab Meadow Beach, where the race is now held. (Start and finish is at the Norwood Avenue Elementary School.) "It is challenging, but it's so much fun," says Northport's Kathryn Martin, a national age-group champion who has done this race several times. "You're just running through the woods."

Benefit: The funds raised from this event go to the Doug Wood Scholarship Fund. This annual award will be presented to a graduating male and female Northport High School athlete (chosen by the NHS director of athletics) to financially aide in their college goals.

Quality t-shirts to all pre-registered runners. Late and day of race applicants will receive t-shirts while supplies last.

Awards: Top 3 Male & Female Finishers, Top 3 Male & Female Masters Finishers, Males & Females in 5 Year Age Groups including 1-12. First Male & Female receive commemorative artwork.

Post Race Activities: Include a generous raffle and refreshments.
